TRAUMA AFTER DARK / / TRAUMA AND THE CHILD @ Dublin Science Gallery

About TRAUMA AND THE CHILD

A conception that has enjoyed wide currency within psychoanalytic literature is that significant trauma in childhood both interrupts development and leaves its mark forever. Where unrecognised and unresolved, the transgenerational transmission of trauma impedes identity development, leaving those subsequent generations further destabilised.

In bringing together child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapists, a child psychiatrist, a midwife and a visual artist, this event explores in utero and early childhood trauma and the inter-generational transmission of trauma. We will reflect on how the inter-generational transmission of trauma affects identity development, which will be brought to life through the presentation of case material of children. We will also hear about the traumatic impact and aftermath of neo-natal death and stillbirth on a group of expectant mothers as explored through the visual arts, highlighting the way in which psychoanalytic practitioners and allied professions can help to support familial and community interventions that promote the type of integration and healing crucial to positive identity development in the aftermath of such traumatic events.
